It’s a fact of life. Most people are followers, thats why there are trends. It goes for music, stocks, social media, etc.. The founders and the people who search for the newest upcoming thing are the ones who capitalize either financially or whatever. Those who ride the trends don’t go further than the person next to them. And those who avoid the trends altogether are usually outcasted. In this instance, people want to feel accepted by liking a name or a song that they may have only heard of once or caught a glimpse of to avoid being “that person” who didn’t know.

The word sheeple comes to mind.
Here’s an Unpopular opinion... investment plays a big part too. I’ve invested a lot of listening time into a small Indy rapper or 2 hoping they pop and improve. Trying to support them while they’re small ya know? Then after awhile they give up and stop releasing music. As a fan you feel like you wasted time on someone who wasted their potential. At least by riding a wave you can enjoy it while it’s hot and move on without truthfully feeling anything about the artist. You can mindlessly enjoy mainstream flashes in the pan, but with “UNDA GROUND SPITTA 69” all you got left of his music is a “sort of dope” sound cloud playlist cause they gave up a year in. Just an annoying feeling.
