If this is your concern then there is a far bigger issue that would need to be addressed: Ranking. It makes sense that a noob would come to the site and check out whoever is 1# and think they're shit and then draw conclusions. I have no idea how the rank system could be fixed but I think that contributes to how a noob perceives the site far more than the star system.

Easy. Reset everyone's rank and star system and then tie the ranking TO the star system along with some percentage of the W/L ratio after changing the culture surrounding how battles are ranked. Badda bing badda boom badda bang. lol

As for the whole ranking system, I have a simple fix: Get rid of the stars. Keep the W/L, but do not use it for ranking people - just keep it under their names. Switch to ELO for actually ranking people on the leaderboards.

No, no no. We're not really talking about style here at all. We're talking about skill level. I think that by this point most everyone here should have at least a basic idea of the components of a verse and how they should be executed. So I'm talking about something like:
1. Bitten verses, not filling the box, verses that look like they were written by banging the keyboard against the users head.

5. Mediocre verse. Everything at least rhymes. Often played out, but some original wordplay/metaphors/similes (forced often). At least two syllable rhymes in some places. Maybe some in lines thrown in. Punches are not especially hard hitting. These verses will have a comprehensible flow when read though not necessarily a good one. It's not BAD but it's not "good" either.

10. An absolutely INCREDIBLE verse. Near to or technically perfect. Everything about a ten is on point. A ten should make you audibly react to it. These should almost never go out.

That's basically my take on it. The in between stuff is sort of hard to gauge but you add and subtract for how hard punches hit. Are bars stretched out? Do things make sense? Does this multi actually fit? etc etc.

I don't think the stars are a bad thing. I don't remember the exact formula but it's gotten from your ratings on your battles and some portion of your W/L. So it basically is Elo. It's just that other users are ranking your performance instead of the site itself because it would be REALLY fucking hard to be able to program it to objectively decide what is and isn't a good battle verse. I think getting everyone to stop thinking anything below a 6 is a hate vote and then using the rating system the way it was intended is the way to start. Once that's done you reset the ESL and you're good to go.
