I think before a name change request is approved , the mod should check to see if the person requesting the name change has any open battles, especially if they contain name play against them.

All that would do is kill activity. You're asking someone to sit around and stop battling while his other battles close to grant his name change request.
I suggest you don't post opens or treat it like a tournament where you both agree to no name changes for pre arranged battles.
