If you think about it this doesn’t make sense. There is no way to speak English without an accent. There is no one objectively correct way to pronounce words. Every place has certain differences in the way they pronounce certain things, and whatever you think is the correct way to pronounce something is just the accent you’ve grown up hearing the most.

That being said, some accents are more common than others. I speak with a New Zealand accent, but given that I’m the only kiwi on the site I wouldn’t expect anybody else to know my accent. Since the majority of LBers are American, the general rule that myself and most other people I follow is, something has to make sense in at least one of the major North American accents, or possibly the most generic British accent. This personally fucks me over a lot, because I’ve never even been to America so for a lot of my own bars I have to guess and ask people how they pronounce certain words. But it’s a system that allows the majority of people to have an easy enough job rhyming. My rule of thumb is, if you can easily imagine how two words would rhyme, even if they don’t in your accent, you should accept it.
