Isn't Harry Potter like the bible out in the UK? Not a bad little story. I personally enjoy Auto Bio's. Eminems the Way I am was good.
But as for fiction, Lord of The Rings is def the way to go. Long, but worth it.

If you haven't read Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan, try that. It actually has a Star Wars force feel to it.
The Belgariad by David Eddings also runs of a fate/prophesized theme that works well.
Both are about a guy that grows up to be a king.
