Chuck Palahniuk is that dude but I wouldn't start with Choke. Haunted or Survivor are better jumping off points IMO. The way he writes is very prose-y and his style alone make you want to keep reading, the fact that his subject matter is so fucking twisted is just a nice bonus.

The "His Dark Materials" trilogy is dope but you gotta read all 3 books. It is a YA series and a bit fantastical but it deals with the notion of God in a really cool way and the story gets pretty touching and gets you in the feels.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is a memoir by Dave Eggars. It is the story of how his parents both died within a couple months of each other from unrelated causes when Dave was 19 years old. He was left to take care of his 8 year old brother. After the memoir was published his sister commited suicide because of how she was portrayed by him. He no longer talks about this book but it is so fucking cleverly written. My favorite non-fiction book by a long shot.
