your song coping helped me change my mind a little about how i perceived the modern pallet of hip hop. it's 808s n heartbreak if kurt cobain had helped produce it. in the song there a few things i usually hate in a song, auto-tune, refrains (refrains, refrains, refrains lol) and simple lyricism and ed sheran type guitar samples. however, the sample is moodied up with good production. elevated. the auto tune is tasteful. it does remind me of ye in a good way. we know (or i think) ye really pushed the movement forward with auto tune, and in the coping song, we see it used to enhance a good singer, to add a 'flavor' to the song. not to hide bad singing. the refrains are heavy andd the lyrics are simple, but the melodies are air tight, the transitions are outstanding, and the lyrics are at least not cringe worthy, and i also find this easier to relate to. the lyrics were my least favorite part, i won't lie, but i still found myself singing that shit a lot.

when i think about this new wave, i think about ye, and camu tao. two cats way ahead of their time shaping the way for these younger rappers to blow up their respected sub-genres. if you fuck with cudi, or ye, then you can understand the transition, and you should be able to open your mind to trying out the new crew.

the only thing i have to speak on the movement in a bad light is that i find the lyricism heart breakingly poor. talkin about how many drugs they do isn't an issue, thinkn red hot chili peppers, or alice in chains, but, not being able to do it with any sense of poetics? "i got money. i spent the money on expensive things to show people i'm getting lots of money. i drank the drank. yea. that's a drank. yea." shit like that is hard to fuck with even when the song vibes. i've talked with 2 gucci about his perspective and why he raps like that, and it seems to be a generational thing, where depth, or poetry is not as needed as 'vibe'.
