When they come back and get bodied by the newer cats, how much of that is a reflection of their era skill-wise and how much of it is a reflection of being simply rusty? The vast majority of us would get bodied if we haven't been doing this for a while and decided to drop one, no matter what skill level we have now.

I hadn't battled in 2 years and beat MC-KG on RULE's card easily who is apparently a middleweight now. Even if you are rusty when you come back you shouldn't be losing to people way beneath your skill level. It's like riding a bike. When you come back from your break.. you still know how to do multis, structure a verse, come up with punchlines, etc.
RULE also didn't battle for years and came back and won a GC vs lockhart in the finals.

There's a difference between how long RULE didn't battle and some cats.
I don't think it's just a time thing with losing your touch, when it's gone it's gone. I've struggled to write anything as far back as 2012. The last non-trash battle I had was long, long time ago. A decent number of battles I've had since 2010 are either throwaway bars from before then, or just garbage I dumped out since I agreed to battle people and couldn't think of anything not trash.
Try writing under 5 battles a year for about nine years and see how your bike theory works out.
I'm not really sure that the bike thing works either. I haven't rode a bike since I was probably like 13 and I'm not sure i could do it now.
