African-American? White/Black? Wtf...Read and Respond please. - Lets Beef

Hey guys, this is not racist...

Anyway - I have a friend from South-Africa who is White...He know lives here in Brazil working with me, but we got in a conversation about how the US makes you "check your race" on applications (as it is the only country I have seen it) On my Euro docs and my Brazilian docs (not brazilian, just live here) it says "European/North American"

Anyway - My South African friend checked "African-American" on his American drivers license test, and was refused to check it because they said QUOTE "White people can not be African-American" HE IS FROM "AFRICA" since his COUNTRY is IN THE CONTINENT OF AFRICA - So if he became an American Citizen he would be "AFRICAN-AMERICAN" would he not??

Ok, so why don't we just say Black? Or "North American" or "South American", European, etc?

A black person from ENGLAND is not "African-American"

Don't you guys agree? AFRICA is a continent in the first place, not a country, so yes in a way if your ROOTS DO GO TO AFRICA you can be "African-American" or "African-English" I could agree with that....

Black people in Brazil are called "Negro" (Portuguese for Black) but statistically are called "South American" just like WHITES, YELLOW, GREENS, etc...Everyone in Europe (from what I remember) On the new Euro Doc (mine is from 2002 even though I was living in the US, I still had a Euro pass, or whatever it was called then. And it said "Italy- United Nations"

I don't know...It seems "African-American" is racist to me...

Also, a technical correct term for someone BORN in the United States would be "United Staten" not "American" considering there are 40 odd "American" countries...

It's like Apartheid definitions all over again.

The funny thing is, the highest likelihood is that he is of Dutch descent. White South-African inhabitants are usually derivative of Dutch nomads. So he'd been African-European, if we're getting pedantic.

It's strange because on every ethnicity/diversity questionnaire I've seen in the UK, White African was always a choice. That'd be the closest broad-term for him.

Well if you want to zone in on definitions, African would have nothing to do with race.

Why can't we just say black yet? Is it still that much of a big deal? In like my first time watching UFC, there was an awesome moment when two guys in black shorts were fighting each other, one black one white. Mike Goldberg was saying like "X is in the black shorts with the slightly greyer tone, while Y is in the back shorts with the..." to which Joe Rogan cuts in and says "Ones the white guy, ones the black guy".

Well if you want to zone in on definitions, African would have nothing to do with race.

Why can't we just say black yet? Is it still that much of a big deal? In like my first time watching UFC, there was an awesome moment when two guys in black shorts were fighting each other, one black one white. Mike Goldberg was saying like "X is in the black shorts with the slightly greyer tone, while Y is in the back shorts with the..." to which Joe Rogan cuts in and says "Ones the white guy, ones the black guy".

You answered your own question. It only happens in the U.S, hence,
MURRRRRRICA.
But for real, the U.S is pretty ignorant, especially these days. My best mate is white, but his family come from South Africa. His grandfather is 100% African. People say I'm African American because I'm dark, but nah, my Dad is white and his family come from Poland, my mom was black. I'd rather just say I'm European by genetics because I've got mostly European in me, Polish, Italian, French. Hell I've got more Chinese than African in me, only thing that's dark is my skin.

But for real, the U.S is pretty ignorant, especially these days. My best mate is white, but his family come from South Africa. His grandfather is 100% African. People say I'm African American because I'm dark, but nah, my Dad is white and his family come from Poland, my mom was black. I'd rather just say I'm European by genetics because I've got mostly European in me, Polish, Italian, French. Hell I've got more Chinese than African in me, only thing that's dark is my skin.

If we "have" to say our race...I agree, I think it should be

"White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, Latino, Oceania, Indiana (in gernal) and "other" but "other" with no "response" needed...

Even my fucking miltary records say "Caucasion" and I remember a black friend of mine being mad that he was "African-American" because he said (quote that I remember) I AM NOT AFRICAN! WHAT THE FUCK... - He said "If I was African-American, that would mean my family tree goes back to Africa" His family tree went to Candada, Holland, and England....lol, all the way back to like 1700's...No African decent that was recorded...

FML...I think Black people and White people and others are fine with being called "Black or White"...I mean, whatever right? Fucking goverment bullshit...They just need to group us into Minority and Majority for vote and tax reasons...That is all.
