A serial is only used to report stolen guns. It's nearly impossible to trace a sold gun by serial. And the serial can be retrieved. Truth be told, scratching off the serial does very little.

A serial is only used to report stolen guns. It's nearly impossible to trace a sold gun by serial. And the serial can be retrieved. Truth be told, scratching off the serial does very little.

Therefore the only logical explanation is that the gun was stolen and sold to me by a shady character who might've possibly used it

& Yes you can trace guns.... If you sell John a gun with serial number 555 and John is from California...If the gun with serial 555 is found at a crime scene in New York you better believe John is in hot water

Not really. For example, John from California could claim that he sold his gun for straight cash at say...a gun show, a perfectly legal transaction. There would be no record of the sale, and nobody other than the parties involved would know it happened.

Furthermore, you could claim that you bought the gun at a gun show with no record of transaction. It's very hard to tie guns in legally with someone who owned it at some time or another. Scratching off the serial isn't worth much.
