As far as I'm loosely aware--Russia, under Putin especially, isn't exactly pro-democracy and they've been trying to devaluate it's legitimacy for a while through smaller scale operations like the ones you see on the internet targeting politics (i.e. Trump, Net Neutrality, etc.). Yea, the economy in Russia is better than under Yeltsin, but a vast majority of that is related to oil prices and demand for Russian oil. The president/ruler of Russia has little to do with it. In fact, the way that Putin has guided the economy away from free market principles has actually stunted the growth of the Russian economy.

Human rights are worse in Russia under Putin than Yeltsin. The Russian Orthodox church is basically just another Putin propaganda unit. BTW, religion is typically antithetical to the expansion of freedom and human rights.

In terms of it's institutions and in terms of freedom Russia has done nothing but go backwards under Putin. Once the going stops getting good for Russian oil, it's going to be a fucking hellhole again.
