Do cleanups. Abandoned dwellings, garages, backyards. Rent a dumpster and buy whatever equipment/supplies you need, charge 110-115% of that cost plus whatever you want to make per hour. You can make a stack in 2-3 days plus you can usually get your hands on some salvageable stuff for extra bread.

Basically what I was going to say..
To add to it, learn to do simple things like changing parts on toilets, repairing holes and minor repairs.. then advertise for work, can work with home owners or investors. End up with a lot of easy projects along with the larger ones.
