Your ideologies define your being. You can be a monarchist without being living in a monarchy. You can be a capitalist in a controlled economy. I would also disagree that China and Cuba would be examples of the style of communism I would support, (which is NOT Bolshevism).

And I don't consider myself necessarily rebellious. there are obviously great positives in America and modern society.

I'm not a believer in "good enough". unrealistic? perhaps, but still worth striving for.

you seem like a reasonable person...so..how could you seriously refer to yourself as a communist without having lived in a communist nation?

in your example, the same would hold true for someone living in a capitalist society, believing in a monarchy, and referring to their self as a monarchist.

this type of belief can only be truly appreciated by experiencing the benefits and pitfalls first hand...at least in my book.

as for not believing in "good enough" ...i'd have to agree. But its a leap in logic to assume that all other economical/social structures would get you to some "nirvana"...nothing is perfect...

in my eyes capitalism is the only method that has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be effective, if imperfect.
