Ivy League Schools? - Lets Beef

I recently got in to it with the future validictorian of my grade. The deal is, this dudes really smart, gets straight A's, has a high sat blah blah blah...but he basically has no community service or extra curriculars!?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to be stacked in service and extra curricular to get in to those schools? I mean, I realize his grades are perfect, but there has to be at least 100,000 kids with the same grades applying along with him. You have to do something to set you apart.

This dudes trying to tell me he'll get in on grades/sat alone.

has he achieved something under his belt that differs from the other cats in his tier list?

I.E would be winning a prize for somthing in his field statewide or somthing kinda like a 1st place prize for a painting that did better than anyone else

As for competitions, he does some science projects every now and then. He went to states, along with a lot of other kids from our grade.

yeah i was thinking same thing with stu

even if they arent up to par 100% of the time, they need it for their statistics when it comes to how many of this ethnicity they hve etc etc,

Yo, you would be surprised. A lot of colleges, including IVY LEAGUE colleges, make their selections on ONE thing, and that is APPLICATION ESSAYS! A lot of people don't reaize this. Yes, grades are important, obviously you're not going to get into an ivy league school with a C average, but, if you have an excellent GPA, AND an excellently written essay, you'll be accepted over those with TONS of extra curriculars, and community service.

Basically, if you make a good impression with admissions, you're in.
