I think Iran had to save face. They had to retaliate, but they don't want a war either.
They basically put the ball back in Trump's court by saying "If you respond we attack Israel and other US allies." It's a gimme, they had to respond, now they have albeit quite mildly considering Qasem Solemani was their Eisenhower. The guy even turned down a chance at the presidency.

I honestly expected more but it shows you people in charge in Iran are rational and know that if Iran is destabilized the whole region will follow and possibly the world.

Officials from Iran have been quoted as calling this a "slap in the face," and threatening further action. I wouldn't downplay those remarks, after they've shown several clear acts of aggression. Attacks on multiple bases, and a presumed cyber attack preceding these military strikes. I'm not convinced it's just saber rattling anymore.

Pretty sure the biggest attack on a US base in the Middle East was done by an Iranian funded and trained group called Hezbollah in Lebanon. I think no one dying in their response is a clear message. I would imagine when coordinating a missile strike it's a lot harder to avoid casualties then actually cause them that couldn't happen by accident.
