& @ Jason, I've Heard (Not Just From The Internet Or News Articles Either, From Actual Graduates) That Getting A Psychology Major Isn't All That It's Cracked Up To Be. There's An Surplus Of Psych Majors So Any Job Opportunities Pertaining To Your Degree Are Limited. The Only Way You'll Get A Career With A Psychology Major (Or Masters) Is By Getting A PhD But Even Then Your Options Are Somewhat Limited. I'm Just Interested If You Have Heard Similar Feedback And Why You Choose The Field If You Did.

What's the story with minors and majors? Why do Americans have to study something unrelated to the field they are focused on?

A Minor Is Mostly Used As A Focus Point For The Major, For Example: Major In Business Administration, Minor In Economics. Major In Education, Minor In History, etc.
Usually If They Minor In Something Unrelated Is So They Have The Option To Pursue Something Different If They Choose To (Major In Biochemistry, Minor In Performing Arts).
*Two Years Of Study In The Subject Is Usually Required For A Minor
** I Assume They Use Minors As A Way To Funnel Down The Broad Subjects People Are Studying. If There's A 50 People With The Same Degree Interviewing For The Same Job But 1 Of Those People Has A Minor In Accounting, If The Employer Needs Someone Who's Also Good With Money They'll Hire Them.

It's also a way to just show variety. If you have a major in..IDK English Literature or something, having a minor in finance or something might make you a more attractive job candidate.

I think some schools may require you to, but most don't.

That's because you don't live in America. In America there's a huge problem with our university system in that we have a billion universities (thanks, privatization) and it's hard as shit to get a job out of college that will pay you shit unless you have a finance major or you're an engineer because there are 500 other guys lined up behind you with your same degree looking for a shitty job as well.
Thus, we have an insane glut of people going to graduate school since the job market is ass. it's not uncommon for 30% of a graduating class from a major university to head to graduate school in some form or another.
I went to a top 50 U.S. university and there were tons of people I went with going to graduate school, probably myself included. We give out advanced degrees like candy, it's really not hard to get a PHD in America, thats one of the reasons it's so important to get an advanced degree at a name university, (like Harvard, Northwestern, Cal-Berkley or Duke). There are lots of people that didn't go to big name schools that have PHD's, MBA's, or JD's and are right back on the unemployment line.

That sucks, in the UK is the other way round, the level of the degree is more important than where you got it. I got in to Cass Business School which is the 2nd best business school in the UK (Oxford's business school being first) but I chose not to go there, and went somewhere else because I wanted to do a degree directly in international marketing instead of just business studies because I know i'll do better in it even if it missed out in going to one of the best business schools.
Obviously Cambridge and Oxford are 2 of the best Universities in the world, but there's only some industries going to one of those Universities would get you a huge advantage in when going for a job, and that's probably medical or sciences, and fuck that.
