The sheer dynamics of star formation dictate the creation of the components of life. Water and rock are created with the formation of every star, at least in the modern age.

Theoretically, it is possible for there to be BILLIONS of planets. We haven't explored much out of our own solar system, all we can rely on is satellite images and probes.
