RULE's Reviews: Freezy - Always Elevate II (Mixtape)
RULE's Reviews:
Freezy - Always Elevate II (Mixtape)

Overview
This is Freezy's 3rd mixtape to date, made up of mostly commerically used beats and featuring a number of underground artists. This is the sequel to his first ever mixtape that was entitled "Always Elevate".
Track By Track Review
1. Say I Tried (Intro)
Quite a mellow start to the tape, the flow was smooth, lyrics were dope for the most part. As the track went on the smoothness of the track fell away a little. Decent opening. 6/10
2. Aint Hard To Tell (Ft Sixx Shott)
Old school beat, both emcees had content that kept the listener hooked. Criminally short though. Another verse apiece and this would of been a mini classick. 7/10
3. Chasing Millions (Ft Mani Mula)
Beat was crackin! Mani & Freezy have great chemisty and compliment each other well. Another solid if not spectacular track. 7/10
4. Back 2 School Shopping (Ft Prestige, Josh Well & Ace Alexander)
Four quality emcees here, neither outshined any of the others here although i personally came away from the track considering Freezy to be the premier of the group. Felt the concept of the track was kept to as strong as it should of been. 7/10
5. Let Em Know
This is the Freezy i wanna here more. The track gave his content direction and really magnified his storytelling and poetic lyricism. Again painfully short-lenghted stopped this becoming great. 8/10
6. Cant Tell Me Nothing (Ft Prestige)
Continuing the high standard of the track before, the content was on point and stayed within the concept of the song. Felt the quality audio-wise was a little iffy here compared to the rest. Good guest verse here. 7/10
7. Long Run
Again another track in the same vien of "Let Em Know". Contents a little more personal here with references to his girl and family, the bars are interesting and yet again beg for more. 7/10
8. Blowing Up (Ft DMullz)
Beat is a nice sample of "Juicy", the track is generally very solid with some nice lines from each. Solid track, nothing groundbreaking. 6/10
9. Round Table Cypher (Ft Jay Red & Pseudo)
An instrumental that you just have to spit over. Solid verses by all, Freezy yet again emerging as the strongest lyrically. 6/10
10. CT State Of Mind (Ft J Spizzy)
Brave beat to cover, Spizzy was decent but off topic mostly. Freezy however reminded on topic and had another strong relevant verse. 6/10
11. Best Of Me (Ft Josh Taylor)
Ohh dark storytelling track here, hook let down the track a bit imo. Good guest verse, but yet again finishes much sooner than it should. 7/10
12. What Now (Ft DMullz)
Head nodder here, solid verses all round and probably the best hook of the tape too. 6/10
Average Track Rating: 6.66/10
Track Of The Tape: Let Em Know
Verdict:
This is a very solid mixtape, as evident from the average track rating. However there are a number of glaring issues i'll address before ending with the positives. First the tape and practically all the tracks were way too short, without actually counting i'd wager that theres less than 15 minutes of Freezy rapping on the entire tape. On those storytelling tracks this fact was a major issue. I didnt mention the hooks much on the track reviews because i had mostly the same comment for each: hook was decent. Your singing is ok but i'd like to see you use some different effects on ther hook vocals and none of the hooks really stood out as catchy or noticable. The last negative is a flaw of the guest verses mostly: Stay on topic! lol too often i found the verses bordering on the generic even when a topic was clearly present. Ok now on to the positives! Firstly Freezy came out of the tape looking extremely strong, always having the star verse of a multi-man track. Your verses always have very intriguing lyrics, i'll forgive the "sting like a bumblebee" line in the intro tho lol. One thing i found was when you had a topic or concept that forced you to write with a clear direction, your lyrics improved tenfold. Storytelling and/or more personal based tracks are a clear strong-suit of yours. Im not suprised that the highest rated track on this tape was the one you were a lone performer on. Your very well rounded and your versitility on this tape was impressive. Overall a solid tape, that was too short (in a positive way) because i wanted to hear more from YOU. Quality wise there was only a few minor issues, its clearly evident that your star is rising, making this solid tape very aptly named.
Tape Rating: 6.5/10

Listening to the mixtape right now and I definitely agree with Rule about the songs being short as hell, lol! But what he also said was true, too: in retrospect it's a good thing because it had me wanting to hear more, especially with Let Em Know (which is my favorite song so far). Great job man!

I vote this for "thread of the year." Not only does it help our LB rappers get some good recognition and advice, it's also a great place to find new music and hear some fresh material. Not to mention your reviews are spot on, thorough, and provide well-needed inspiration, RULE. Much respect, fam. Wish more people viewed hip-hop as an art community the way you do. Real talk.
