RULE's The Basics Series: Punchlines
RULE's The Basics Series: Punchlines
Ok, im gonna give you guys and gals some pointers on how to create a solid if simple punchline.
Step One: Writing Format
Im suprised at how many people attempt to write punchlines by starting off with a random multi set and just typing to see what happens. To be sure of crafting a punchline i'd advise beginners to write in this sequence:
The Set-Up > The Punchline > The Build.
Step Two: Creating A Set-Up
What is a Set-Up? The set up is the phrase, saying, or insult etc that you plan to use against your opponent. I'll give you few examples:
He's a "Waste Of Space" like...
He wouldnt have "Ground-breaking Bars" with...
I'd "Lick Shots" like...
These are three VERY basic set-ups, the type of thing that could lead to a fairly solid if unspectacular punchline. As you improve your structure and set-ups will become much more creative but for now try using these types of set-ups.
Step Three: Choosing A Punchline
Ok, now we have our set-up, we need to make it into a punchline. Basically take your set-up and try to think of the most creative twist on it that you can.
He wouldnt have "Ground-breaking Bars" with...
Ok so we have "Ground"... Earth? Soil? Pavement? start thinking about ways to flip it. Ok what else? "Bars"... Prison? Gold Bars? Phone Battery Displays? Try combining the set-up words. "Ground-braking"... Earthquakes? Miners? Tunneling? Think about the most creative way you can describe something that "Brakes the ground" with or in "Bars"... Howabout...
He wouldnt have "Ground-braking Bars" as an EARTHQUAKE IN IBIZA!!
Bars / Clubs... groundbraking / earthquakes... its ok. Lets try something else...
He wouldnt have "Ground-braking Bars" with a PRISON TUNNEL!!
The ground brake IN bars, inside a cell... again its not amazing but a solid enough punchline.
Step Four: Writing The Bar
So now we have the set-up and punchline. Its time to build it into a full bar. Its best to keep the set-up as relevant to the actual punchline as possible. No point just rhyming anything, make the most of your build up space!! So our multi set is: PRISON TUNNEL
When i "Light Up, Flashing" after him? This KID IN TROUBLE... (This references a police chase with the flashing lights after him, which is relevant to the prison themed punchline) however with the punchline being a diss on his writing skill, a physical threat is probably out of place in the build so....
Your lines are softer than a KITTENS CUDDLE... (The punchline is a diss about the quality of his bars, so the focus of the build needs to be leading up to that point) not a great line but it doesnt keep the bar relevant as far as the punchlines purpose goes....
You cant "Free Dem" nice lines! Its a GIVEN STRUGGLE... (By using the Free dem/freedom wordplay the bar is kept relevant and on theme both, so make sure you tweek and play with your builds to help the punchline impact as much as possible.) Remember the "filler" can win or lose you a battle, dont waste any space as much as possible, try to keep the builds purposeful.
So with this^ you have plenty of ideas and avenues to craft a solid punchline.
And so we create:
You cant "Free Dem" nice lines! Its a GIVEN STRUGGLE so keep ya lips "Locked Tight" like a KISS N CUDDLE cuz you wouldnt have "Ground-braking Bars" w/ a PRISON TUNNEL!!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
A simple way to create solid punchlines. Five punchlines of this lenght will fill an eight line box. And that would be enough firepower to defeat the majority of mid-to-lower tier cats on the entire site. To step up to a higher level you need to work on things like flow, wording, creative (<--- the MOST important aspect of any verse) and the relevance of your attacks.
REMEMBER that this is MERELY the easiest and quickest way to create a solid punchline, there are many ways to craft stronger and more creative punchlines. Many people have different styles and you should always work to your own strengths. But this will provide a nice starting point.
