I'd settle into a coffin knowing that I've at least got some published material that is all me, even if it didn't make a splash. Nick Drake wasn't famous until well after he died, his entire discography was re-published hundreds of times and he was labelled the best folk guitarist in history. Dude never played a single live show in his 27 year life (27 club, I know). I mean, getting just a little bit of satisfaction out of having a finished piece of work is enough, you know? Who gives a fuck about other people, fame is a bonus in my opinion.
Even if you are a P.E. teacher, it's still a chance to breed greatness. Best you could get out of that is have one of your pupils go on to be a massive quarterback and you can drink in bars and say "I taught that guy..."
