say what you want about Jay-Z, Cam, or Rick Ross....but the fact of the matter is that they stay true to themself as artists, and still managed to put out music that was promoted and vended properly.

there is a DISTINCT difference between cats like, Pharoahe Monch....who is consistently above the fray and writes shit out of this world...so despite only minor success in the mainstream, he is well respected by his peers...and cats like damn near every song posted in this thread. if given the opportunity, they couldnt write a relatable song if their life depended on it...

bottom line...too many GREAT emcees have stradled the line between art and commercialism for me to respect alot of these clowns that make songs that only pULSe would listen to.
Too many have stradled the line between art and commercialism...word..So you think AZ isn't shit because you didnt hear from him after Sugar Hill and he never had success like Jay-Z & Rick Ross?

He made the choice to do what he does best, and he doesn't dumb down his lyrics. He prides himself on being able to make the music he wants, the way he wants it, and not have it compromised because of what some label wants him to do. That's why he's been takin so long to drop Doe Or Die 2...He's gotta get shit done his way & he's strongly passionate about what he does.. He's tryna get some ill ass production on it and he's got a few dope producers already and possibly a Nas feature and Nas possibly has an AZ feature on his next album "Life Is Good"...

Real niggas recognize real niggas. Passionate Hip-Hop heads that scrutinize every bar of a song like myself appreciate rappers that drop meaningful, dope ass bars with smooth flow and clever wording...
