AZ not overrated yo...

but i think that alot of yall mis rate cats. while its special and heartwarming to make records that only you and 17-20 hardcore die-hard fans like....what really makes hip hop music dope are the records that transcend many different tastes. this doesnt necessarily equate to record sales, but record sales should be factored in. in the case of AZ...he dropped a heavily spun record called 'Sugar Hill' in like '93 or '94 to my best recollection...had the sole guest feature on Illmatic...and then faded to black.....whether this is attributed to 'not selling out' or 'staying true to his music' is up for debate....but at the end of the day..it's probably mostly due to not being able to cut it.

say what you want about Jay-Z, Cam, or Rick Ross....but the fact of the matter is that they stay true to themself as artists, and still managed to put out music that was promoted and vended properly.

there is a DISTINCT difference between cats like, Pharoahe Monch....who is consistently above the fray and writes shit out of this world...so despite only minor success in the mainstream, he is well respected by his peers...and cats like damn near every song posted in this thread. if given the opportunity, they couldnt write a relatable song if their life depended on it...

bottom line...too many GREAT emcees have stradled the line between art and commercialism for me to respect alot of these clowns that make songs that only pULSe would listen to.
