Now we're getting somewhere...kinda...

but you're trying to shift the patrons of both categorically:. You're slippin...

Ok.. you can't say "Rap" tries.. but you can some "rappers" do..
Langston Hughes uses a set structure to pervade his craft
Fuck it, 50 Cent did too..

Rappers and poets don't have to be involved in each others communities for them to be related. Sandals and sneakers are still shoes at the end of the day.. they're related because they're both created for the same purpose

Dunno where your going with this...

There are techniques of poetry and techniques of rap.
Vinnie Paz uses a different technique than Lupe..
Langston Hughes and Jack Kerouac had different techniques
yes, in the end its all rap
but in the end it's all poetry too.

Rap doesn't claim to do shit..lol, its the dumbasses involved with it that fuck it over.. s'why Hip Hop is damn near dead because people try to sound more cultured than they really are.

There's genres related to both too

Poetry:
Limmerick, Hiku, yada yada

Rap:
Conscious, Horror-core, blah blah, shit.. regionally its different as well

I totally agree with saying that Rap is a genre and that Poetry is an artform. But they ARE related.
