I thought that getting a "mail order bride" actually involved ordering a bride, just like ordering something from a catalog, and having her sent to you by mail. Only much later did I discover that "mail order bride" is a somewhat derogatory term for women who advertise themselves as potential spouses for men in wealthier countries.

Come to think of it, my original interpretation is practically sex slavery; but I had no knowledge of that then.
