How Do People Vote Here?
Just curious. Do people just read a verse once then drop a vote?
If you dont understand a bar, do you just continue on without at least trying to understand or asking the writer what it means? What makes a bar hot to you guys? Just asking because there's always someone complaining about voting, including myself. Personally, I dont think people even try to understand something that they dont. I feel people just continue on, claim they read the verse 3 or 4 times. No you don't lmao Anyways, how do yall vote? |
I’ll read a verse several times if it’s not clear from the jump who won. First emphasis is on basics. Does it all rhyme? Does it make sense? Is it for the most part grammatically correct (except slang and vernacular)? Next, does it flow like you can use the verse in an acapella battle? Text battling is imitating that...so if you got long ass sentences without a rhyme or your patterns are mad inconsistent, it fucks with the read. A clean read with a good flow means a lot. Most of the high level battlers master the first two parts so lastly I’ll analyze punches. Is it creative? Does your wordplay make sense both ways without reaching? Are your concepts correctly used? Are your figures of speech used in the proper context?
I used to not look up bars because if I didn’t get it the first time, that’s the writer’s fault for not being accessible to the audience. But then I saw how many bars the general public here found hot that were about shit like Pokémon, DBZ, Harry Potter, etc that I have no interest in...between that and a vote I placed one time on a nameplay that had one additional meaning I wasn’t privy to, I started doing a quick look up. And if anyone mentions a Venn diagram, I’ve got time today and want all that smoke |

1. Direct, relevant bars - Most people here clearly don't write for their opponent so when people do it always sticks out. Name flips are fine too. Sometimes basic, sometimes great, but at least they're direct. 2. Double meaning wordplay - Most people here do single meaning similes and sometimes that's 75%+ of their verse so its boring and not creative. Double meanings are difficult to write but hit harder than anything. A bar that works both ways and attacks your opponent specifically is as perfect as you can get. 3. Original concepts/schemes/wordplay - Again, its so nice to read a verse that isnt just Mcgregor, Trump, Marvel bars the whole way through. 4. Similes - They come into play only after all that stuff, and I'm looking for ones that are creative, complex etc. I'm bored of people using nothing but similes that could apply to anyone. Read a 16 line verse earlier today where 12 lines were single-meaning similes. Yawn. 5. General shit with no wordplay - So just a cypher basically. Its battle rap. Battle your opponent. You'll rarely win if you do this. Then in terms of readability formatting matters a lot. I think 3-4 syllables is fine, the sweet spot is 4-6 and over 6 usually results in ugly reachy punches. I'd rather read a clean, sleek 4 syllable verse than a reachy 9 syllable verse. I see so many people use unnatural wording or overly long sentences and I always mark it down. So my vote is an average of all that, with preference going towards those who write towards their opponent and try double meanings and original ideas. I personally think for a text 'battle', its dumb to see so many voters not take into consideration if one person has clearly written for their opponent and one person has just chained random lines together. I also don't like that voters sometimes prefer simple one way punchlines to someone trying to actually break down and talk to their opponent. There's a lot I'd change. Edit: And to address what y'all are asking. I read once, then once again as I start writing my vote. I always read expos and google stuff I don't catch. Even if the bar is trash at least you learn something new. |

This is the best answer to this question i have ever seen. :high: |
30 seconds max to research something I don’t understand. If I determine that it’s something ridiculous/obscure, it loses points.
Also definitely some weird opinions being expressed in this thread. Text battling seriously on letsbeef.com is inherently more nerdy than having watched dragon ball Z as a kid. Lmao. |
I read the verse and I pick the one I felt hurt the opponent more.
You guys annoy me because in trying to overthink everything, you end up dumbing it down. Everyone knows I'm annoying as fuck when my vote comes in. I break everything down, I shark every little detail like things such as using a word in the build up that you used in the punch. There's a lot of small details that I like to focus on in what makes a verse good and honestly I'd say there's very few people on here that get those sort of technical aspects of a writing or reading a verse. But at the end of the day, there's one thing it all points to and that's simply which verse you enjoyed more. If I don't get something, I won't enjoy the bar. I'm not researching something that I don't get, nor am I PMing you, nor am I not going to vote. It's your fault. Write it clearer or don't write an obscure reference. Sometimes you'll have someone that's a much better writer. Better fundamentals, better set ups, better everything, but I just literally prefer the opponent's verse. Maybe it's some comedy or a personal approach. Maybe I'm swayed because it's an underdog performing his best against a vet with a disappointing drop. Whatever it is, the verse I enjoy more and I feel hit the opponent more is ultimately what I vote for every time. |
Texts -
1. Metaphors/Wordplays which transition smoothly enough to a punch 2. Personals 3. Humour (cnt stress this enough really.) 4. Multis and formatting (generally i dnt believe flow can be judged esp in a text battle but a lucid reading experience is totally dependent on how one formats and uses his/her multis which gives a lasting impression to the reader.) 5. The verse gotta be relevant and easy to understand. Obscure concepts dnt work for me. Audios - 1. Flow 2. Clear Delivery 3. Punches or Jabs if it is a freestyle. 4. If it's on a beat, it's always gonna be the one who rode the beat better who is gonna have a major advantage for me. 5. Recording quality. |

Usually just vote for the most popular battler without reading the verses

Concepts / freshness is what stands out to me above all else.
I feel like ive read every concept ever over the last few years so when someone writes someting and i go "man i wish i would thought of that" ... that sticks out. I also like bars that are perfectly formed, with related builds but with wording thats natural. And of course a bar(s) that STING. A good personal that hurts sticks out. 1/ |
There's more hardcore hip hop/battle rap heads that lose battles to fat snot dripping anime nerds who cant quote a single 2pac line. And they vote for each other outside of their little gay huddles.
This site dont know no damn hip hop lol. You ask most people here who's in their top 10 and they either list a bunch of people they dont listen to or what the previous guy said. Shits sad and an embarrassment to the culture. No one here watches battle rap but feel that their opinion on what belongs in a verse matters. That's about as goofy as it gets. I dont take LB's feedback serious and never will. |

I listen to what I want music wise, I learn from all sounds. I'm not just a hip hop listener. That's honestly where people mistake most that would play a son by someone like Soulja Boy.. Because they can be into Raw hip hop as well. Actually, Jason and I used to spend HOURS at a time sharing ALL KINDS OF SHIT on IM. Because some people in this world listen to other shit besides 1 genre or 1 type of branch from that genre. Yeah I listen to Trap, Hardcore hip hop, and anything related. And no one can tell me different because I can out rap anyone on this site on a beat. |

If someone listens to Lil Peep they're probably the dorks you're talking about. They probably have a fucking sick following on Tik Tok. They can definitely whip and/or nae nae.
If you're having a hissy fit because people are into "dorky shit and don't even listen to hip hop" you can't shift into talking about how dope Lil Peep and Soulja Boi are. Pick one argument or the other. |

@Noir you reading this shit?? This is exactly what we talked about. Mfs think cause you listen to R&B, you don't know hip hop. The mental thought behind that haha ---------- Post added at 05:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:16 PM ---------- I actually listen to hip hop, old and new. Rap, trap, all that. Some of you virgins are full on rock and roll, telling other mfs how to rap battle. Text and audio. @Kiwi Peewee haha! That's funny lmfao |
That's literally you're argument. Everyone on here is into rap. Thats how we got here. Just cause they like fucking anime and watching meme compilations doesn't mean they don't know rap song, just like because you listen to incomprehensible lame ass noise doesn't mean you aren't.
Punk: I listen to all music. Not just rap. Hey Bleu look at this guy being mean about R&B. Also Punk: Lol yawll virgins listen to Rock and Roll? |

Lol explain this angle to where it remotely makes sense. You fruit pops couldn't go toe to toe with any of the actual rappers who already left this dump. fyi. You overly use that corny ass whip and nae nae joke. Shit was wack when you first said it in 2014. The shit still wack in 2020 |

You try to rap, cool, whatever. Before you try to big league is because you have a skill that we don't, remember, you're the one who claimed he'd never post on the forums again because it was distracting him from making moves. If you wanna rap go fucking do it and don't bitch cause we don't fancy talking to you about it. |

Were down to the last 11 members and people still voting like they skim through verses for credits. I'm predicting 2022 the site will be offline. I'm only doing illmania to enjoy the final run with nt DedSec homies. |
You comment on who you think won live battles even though you don't live battle. You do some internet shit. That's the same opinion. Dudes dont have to rap or watch live battles to vote.
I'm surprised you get a hard time with personals tbh. I've never got it. I'm basically known as THE personals guy and I never get people saying that shit, although I know the ones from that thread think that way. |
@Punk
How do I vote here? I've been around the online rap battle thing for a decade or so. I'm not trying to argue with you but rather give you a different perspective. I listen to pretty much only metal, hard rock, post grunge, etc. I like bands like Metallica, Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold, Mudvayne, Slipknot, Mushroomhead, Parkway Drive, White Chapel, Thrice and so on and so forth. I could list bands for days. I can tell you which guitarists played with what bands which years. I can name what song is from what album by what band. What little rap I do listen to is artists like Merkules, Chris Webby, Token, Royce Da 5'9, J Cole, etc. There is a small niche of hip hop I like that I can listen to and not forget I'm listening to it. So... I don't see what that has to do with my voting. I don't see what that has to do with "the culture." This is a lame ass online rap battle website. The third one I've been on because they all go under. Even this one will. I don't write like anyone else on the site. I've never cared to write punchlines. I don't use wordplays. I just do whatever I feel like doing with total disregard for votes. I don't critique anyone on what they're doing. I barely even vote. I just mind my own business and read the forums. I read battles and don't vote. I laugh at shitty battles. I cringe at even shittier battles. Sometimes I vote when both people message me. I've been in the FVC like 4 times. I know how to write "correctly" for LB. I don't. What's the point if it's not "me?" Taking all this in, what kind of music or what someone is into doesn't correlate to their ability to vote. Most people who are "hip hop heads" don't even understand proper writing. Memorizing Tupac's lyrics doesn't make you a better battler. These "nerds" exist becuase they understand the formula needed to write good punchlines. The puns behind it all. There is a fine tuned technique to writing clever shit. I don't have that technique. I can write entertaining lines but not good ones. That's why I do my own thing. I don't vote much. Not becuase I'm not into "real hip hop." BECAUSE NO ONE FUCKING LISTENS. 90% of people here are convinced, like you, they are the best. Not a bad attitude to have. However, when a vote is dropped against them, they instantly disregard it as ignorance. I must not know what I'm talking about. That right there answers your question. How do I vote here? I don't. |

Of course, I get the typical response back regarding this subject, but it's whatever, though. I'd rather write 1000 lines about DBZ or Pokemon than one about jacking off Jesus or rolleskating on Legos. |
