Is freestyling...

A NECESSARY facet of hip-hop?

A few weeks ago Emdub posted a thread saying that unless you can freestyle, you can't be a true emcee. How many of you believe that this is true? Does the inability to freestyle hinder your impact in a hip-hop setting?

A true emcee is someone who puts rap before everything else, and cares about the music over the money.

Godbody is a guy who can freestyle good & write good as well, fuck what I said on that other thread he really doesn't write his freestyles we were throwing words to him just last night & it was just like all of his other stuff. (@ The guy who said they prolly suck at writing)

As for the OP's question, I think every part of rap is absolutely needed. Having diverse subsets of cultures within a larger one that are pretty much all just as popular as the next diversifies the culture immensely. I don't necessarily think one facet is better than another, and those who say one facet is absolutely needed to make you good just lack the open mind to understand that what makes a "good" emcee is completely subjective.

Well then.

a true EMCEE can rock a crowd & get everyone hyped. That's what the definition of an emcee is. If they cant rock a crowd or never did a show then theyre simple an artist/musician/rapper.

Read my post on the subjectivity of a "true emcee" please.

freestyling doesnt have shit to do with how good you are as an artist....its more of a party favor if anything

This.

Probably means more since you're one of the best freestylers around here.

Mr-Felon 04-17-2014 09:10 PM

Freestyling usually has no direction just random bullshit I think its overrated

Apollyon 04-17-2014 11:55 PM

Heres what makes a good emcee.. The ability to drop good bars on tracks or acapella ish.. It doesnt matter if its freestyle or written as long as theyre good bars that are delivered good.. And if its over a beat then you gotta ride the beat.. Simple shit..

The Dope Man 04-18-2014 10:24 AM

i think y'all got it twisted...an emcee is a term for a performer, MC=Master of Ceremonies, or a Host.

"Originally proclaimed by the legendary emcee Rakim (of the group Eric B. and Rakim) on his 1986 urban hit "Eric B. Is President;" to Rakim, an MC was any rapper who was able to control the crowd that he was presiding over."

An MC is slightly different from the average rapper, lyricists, artist. An MC is someone who performs & rocks a crowd with a microphone while the DJ is spinnin some shit....

I dont think it's neccesarry its like bein able to whistle, cool party trick but pretty useless
