Riley Cooper situation.

Supposedly, a wide receiver from the Eagles: Riley Cooper got caught on video saying the word: ''Nigger.'' Now there's this HUGE out-break of media following this. Now I'm not racist whatsoever, but this is really grinding my gears. I don't understand the double standards of this word. Lil Wayne rhymes the word ''nigga'' with every single word out there, but that's okay? The word ''nigger'' would be offensive to people of slave descent, am I right? Considering that's where the word started. So wouldn't it be offensive for African American's of that descent no matter what the race is that said it? It's still using a word used as an insult to their own hard times in life.. So what I'm trying to say here is: Why is it okay for some to say it, and other's cannot? Racism is only kept around when stuff like this happens. Why can Dave Chappelle walk on stage and bash any race he wants, but that's acceptable? Why is racism only focused around one race? I feel like racism should've died a hundred years ago.. A word shouldn't offend someone so much, brush it off, move on. If people just brush it off rather than starting a whole out-rage the word would lose it's importance and fade away.. Throw some feedback, maybe I'm seeing this wrong.

V3numb 08-01-2013 01:20 PM

man... i had a whole thread on "nigga","nigger","negro". but it got deleted cause the ppl were very retarded and ignorant.. i would but tbh it'd just be a waste of 20mins

Context

Obey 08-01-2013 01:23 PM

I'm not saying it's right to say the word at all. What I'm saying is, wouldn't it still be offensive if an African American said it too? It'd be like insulting your own heritage.

V3numb 08-01-2013 01:26 PM

it's kinda complicated.. and ppl either say yes/no.. there's few fence hangers.. but in the end it's up to you and the POV you yourself holds

edit:media will always spin it negative tho just to get some extra papers bough in the morning

J u s T C 08-01-2013 01:27 PM

It is insulting to them. You can't be in the spotlight and say anything without offending someone. Rightly or wrongly Africans get a pass, whites don't. This is common knowledge. The uproar isn't a surprise and he should have never said it to put himself in this position.

Obey 08-01-2013 01:29 PM

^ Agree'd 100% @Just C - I just feel like racism is now created by the media. I'm sure a lot of black folks on this site would agree that they wouldn't care if someone said it. It's all hyped by the media as @V3numb said. I just wish it'd go away so there wouldn't always be tension between the races.

J u s T C 08-01-2013 01:29 PM

Oh yeah. Link the clip?

Obey 08-01-2013 01:45 PM

@Just C - Riley Cooper clip?

V3numb 08-01-2013 01:55 PM

there will always be hype and disturbance the media portrays.. even if there isnt anything there.. they'll spin it till it does

The Ghost of Freak 08-01-2013 02:20 PM

Educated black people still remember lynchings from the 1950's (like Emmett Till) and white people using the word as definite racial slur with the -er pronounced at the end, but juxtapose that with the 90's Take the Word Back movement which try to drop the -er and add an -a to make the word mean brother or family.

Two opposite definitions = a bit confusing for both the black and otherwise community. Either way white people should just avoid using the word as Just C pointed out.

wow are you serious ...Africans? from Africa dont say nigga ....i'm pretty sure..Black People In America say it to kind of Own the word! how do you remove negative thoughts from some thing ...make it positive
Nigger def. is a Lazy White Person ...not a Black Person
Nigga def. is a brother

if your not a minority you'll never understand it which its not your fault its how you wer socialized
chose to be bigger then words my NIGGAS!

think about this, the swastika is negative to the Eye cuz of what it represents Nazis Jews Genocide
but if you tilt it so its flat and not at an angle its the SIGN OF PEACE that has been used for hundreds of thousands of years!:jacked:
people always chose to remember the negative! coz the have to work alot harder to be POSITIVE

V3numb 08-01-2013 02:54 PM

idk about the Lazy white person thing but...

"nigger" from what i know is the racial slur for black people

and "nigga" also means "Ignorant person"

Obey 08-01-2013 02:54 PM

Okay, but that's not the issue. Whether you're ''owning'' the word or not. You make it seem less serious, even if he said ''nigga'' I'm sure it'd be getting the same attention.

V3numb 08-01-2013 03:00 PM

saying nigga is like running with scissors.. you may or may not get hurt

saying "nigger" is like throwing a grenade into the crowd, you're bound to get some shit

the differences will always be debated on and imo would never be solved... because ppl are hard-headed and have their opinions.. unless you're growing up around ppl that say the word as we did you really cant even begin to comprehend.. im Asian.. and say it to other asians.., moved to Ct said it to blacks.. and they was cool with it too tbh.. (aside from the handful that hate what they dont understand.. but them cats were Low tier to my school clique)

J u s T C 08-01-2013 03:04 PM

Africans do say nigga. Shit serbians, polish, Italians and Spanish say Nigga. And there is a reason for the term AFRICAN American.

And yeah Obey. A clip of him being caught out saying it.

Obey 08-01-2013 03:32 PM

In his interview he said he got in an altercation with a black security guard.. Ending in this pretty low-classed move. @Just C

NOBLE 08-01-2013 03:55 PM

If you're not black, you sound like a fool saying what black people should be doing or how they should perceive something. The same goes vice versa. You may think you have an idea what it's like to live in someone else's world or to walk in their shoes, but you really don't.

Phil Banks 08-01-2013 04:20 PM

feather an tar him or hang him...... lol the shit that makes the fucken news is so laughable who gives a fuck some linebacker gon remember that shit an light that fool up over it... what else needs to be done? dudes an idiot tho

Obey 08-01-2013 04:24 PM

@NOBLE But why ''should'' people be doing things? Why can't people act off their own personal wants, rather than falling into a stereotypical category? Why can't a white kid dress like a black kid, or a black kid dress like a white kid? Why is there labels that surround society? Without stereotypes and labels, there's no racism. Without racism, there's no hate crimes. And what do you mean ''walk in their shoes?'' Racism was a long-long time ago, something we all couldn't live again. What people during that time went through is horrible, but so was the holocaust. We seem to be able to get past the Nazi/Jewish racism. It's being held onto by a thread that needs to be cut. Not saying history should be forgotten, I'm saying that white's don't own slaves anymore and shouldn't have so much hatred built towards them. I've learned that color of skin doesn't define a person, I'm just hoping the rest of the world soon does.

---------- Post added at 04:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:21 PM ----------

@Phil Banks - Agree'd.. someone's going to have personal hatred towards him during a game and really hit him. Watch his interview, he looks as if he's about to cry how bad he feels. He admitted he was drinking and got into an altercation. But the nerve of Marcus Vick to put a ''bounty'' on Riley's head is insane. Mike Vick was responsible for torturing thousands of dogs. Media needs to let this one go before he gets seriously injured during the season.

Phil Banks 08-01-2013 04:27 PM

Marcus Vick went undrafted hes fucken stupid.... enough wasted talent between those 2 retards to create a player..... im not an eagles fan i couldnt careless but that lame....same time when u drunk an mad shit happens ppl need to chill the fuck out

mister jon flako 08-01-2013 04:27 PM

the word defines it's as being ignorant..so techically any1 can be a nigger//what about the word fag,,that means bundle of sticks..or even the word gay which means happy,,slang fucks up alot of shit...this is just a distraction by the media to put minds on things that arent important so people forget what really is important,,and thats the government fucking up ameerica and turning pocket upside dwon to full fill an immenmet domain to lessen population, regulate gun control for a new era of life,,the new world order,,

I just think its naive to presume how black people should react to something, or what gay people should do, or how other minorities should behave if you do not fit into any of these categories yourself. There are things about people, races and groups that you will never understand. You would almost have to be born again as someone from that race or group to fully understand. When you're saying "they should do this" or "they should do that" and you aren't talking from personal experience, it just sounds foolish.

pretty much this..

Obey 08-01-2013 04:57 PM

@NOBLE But my point is, as long as there's such a negative reaction to something so small such as this, we'll never escape the problem.

V3numb 08-01-2013 04:59 PM

is it really somthing small tho?..

oh wait nvm lol i dont wanna get caught up in this thread

If they were reacting purely because that one football player used the 'n' word, then yea, I would agree with you that it's a huge reaction over "something so small." However, I doubt that all the reactions are ONLY because of that one incident rather than what it represents in the minds of those who are reacting, which is a much bigger 'not so small' problem in society at large. At the same time, I wouldn't presume how "small" or "large" a problem should be for someone else unless you have gone through that problem yourself under the same circumstances or are going through it now. It's just like the Chinese water torture. It's counter-intuitive to think someone would suffer so much from just having water drops repeatedly on their forehead. But unless you've gone through it yourself, you may never fully understand why they react to it to the point where they are driven insane.

Streetz De Hood 08-01-2013 05:33 PM

As a black man when issues like this pop up I challenge my race to explain the difference between the white population who never owned a slave making racial jokes, slurs, stereotypes etc and the black population who was never a slave making racial jokes, slurs, stereotypes etc? I ask them if a black celebrity was caught on type calling a white person cracker, mading a hillbilly joke, or stereotypical phrase like " fuckin white people always___" would the white community then have a right to protest outside city hall, make death threats, attack them on social media, etc? The fight for racial equality between black and whites shouldnt be a point the finger game. Wrong should be wrong for both of us and until we as African Americans also hold ourselves accountable for how we treat, view, interact, respond to the white population...there's no way in here we can realistically expect anything to change. I'm constantly telling my family, friends, and the black kids/teens I mentor to take responsibility for their image and how the world perceives them. If they don't like the rap their getting individually or how other races are perceive our race then change it through leading by example, getting an education, giving back to the community, unifying their household, displaying more self-respect etc etc. But every time I say it.. it either goes in one ear or out the other or i get called "racist against my own race".

Indonesia 08-01-2013 10:49 PM

dudes y'all can talk about this until the world ended and still think about it the same way you did before you started talking.

Hubert Cumberdale 08-02-2013 07:04 AM

Being a white male in 2013 is a minority.

If you voted for John McCain, you were a sexist racist.
