Just signed to a record label...
 

This isn't a boasting or appreciation thread: my band just signed to an independent label that had major success with a band a couple of years back (some of you may be familiar with The View, number 1 debut album in the UK, top 10's ever since) and it prompted me to think.

How many of you would actually sign to an indie label if offered, or are you all holding out for that multi-million deal with Sony Bloodsuckers BMG?

aye Ask...not to be a buzzkill...but i was curious about how this works...when you sign...do you lose your ability to control your 'intellectual property'....or whatever they call it?

It comes down to the contract man. The way we have it is that all copyrights remain our own, but the label retain a right to a certain cut of royalties made from those works. All that's been worked out though, basically they give us all the studio time we need, manage us, whore us out to radio stations, big festivals, promoters and the majors etc and when the EP's/Singles/Albums sell they recoup a percentage of the sales to cover costs (and make a small profit of course). We've known these guys for a while though, they're well connected but they're straight up as well, so we've no worries RE: getting fleeced or whatever. To us it's not too much about the money either way, it's a massive opportunity to finally be a full time musician. A couple of number 1 albums would be nice though lol.

Thanks everyone for the support too, it's a huge step up for any struggling band, after 3 years it's nice for it to finally be paying off.

damn...that was a real good expo...i've always wondered how that shit worked...so basically..this is like a starter kit for new professional acts...free studio time alone is insane...i pay for all my shit smh...this sounds SUPER promising man...and it couldnt have happened to a more cool cat

Pretty much a starter kit man yeah, they open the door, it's up to us to walk through it. Until now we've paid a shitload to record and managed our own affairs entirely, all the while juggling work/university and trying to find time to actually write music so it's a real load off too.
