There is no set timeframe on what makes something a classic. Art is subjective.

Too dependent on a wide range of tastes and prefs to abbreviate it to those high rankings. I like how you provided both arguments though—as someone who thinks Kendrick is good but a bit overhyped (as the current state of hip hop is eh) I was nodding at your first paragraph. I think there's too many, generally speaking underground, heads that didn't get enough recognition. But without a doubt he deserves a fair amount imo. I'd say that he doesn't deserve to be even in top 10 or 15—but I can absolutely respect anyone who'd put him up there. He's obviously made a statement in the rap scene, if people want to do better they need to step up. Biggie was a somewhat pioneer in certain respects so he didn't need much more than he put out to get as much as he did. As for Tupac, my own personal preference is outside his music but he's another person I can understand being up there.
I'm doing a project on the evolution of hip hop right now, I just got to the Bad Boy Ent. vs Death Row Rec. beef—I'm excited to see how that pans out. Historically speaking though, aside from tastes/prefs, I think that Rakim dude should be talked about more since he somewhat single handedly pioneered the current state of rapping. I believe he popularized the saying multiple relating concepts in one concise creative line type shit and was the first to really utilize it. Took the solo artist a big leap toward conscious rhyming. Dr. Dre as a figure in Hip Hop as been all around the globe. He was producing when it was funky, then went straight to gangster rap with NWA, then practically shot hip hop into mainstream with The Chronic solo album and co-started a major label that contributed to the Tupac/Biggie limelight. That deserves something too.
But yea Kendrick, he's cool I like him. Top 20 probably.

Money is meaningless. You're a mark. If you think they're referring to money, when they speak of value in the term "classic," you're sorely mistaken.

Don't be a mark, then. I'm not having a debate with you. I'm telling you how you're wrong. Fuck I care about whether I call you a name for?

This album alone in its first week has people going from debating if Kendrick is even the best rapper alive...... to debating if he is the greatest of all time. The value of this album is tremendous (in its first week).

I can see how he can be in contention for top 10 right now but I don't know about number one. It's funny @ Erupt posted that HipHopDX video because I just watched one the other day that actually had me agreeing with Rude Jude. That's not something I do a lot. Anyhow, what Jude was saying was that it's too early too call Kendrick the greatest. Because we don't know how the albums that he's dropped are going to hold up against time. This is an argument I can get behind. Dude's been in the game for five years(?) and to even get into the top 5 he's going to have to compete with guys who have careers spanning twenty years or at least have had some of the most classic albums of all time that still hold up after multiple decades.
I think Kendrick has a fair case for Top 10 contention. A number one spot seems premature at the moment. Especially with competition being so sparse in this era. I mean, as far as "mainstream" goes there's barely a handful of rappers that are on that level.

"It's been exactly one week since Kendrick Lamar released his latest full-length album, DAMN., and in addition to earning more than 300 million streams during that time, the TDE emcee now owns two of the top five highest-rated albums of all-time" ... Thats from Metacritic...
They only go back as far as 1999 but thats almost 20 years. Two out of the top 5 in the span of 2 years is crazy.
