Default Turnbull ACs: A 6 Part Series

I originally wrote the first 5 chapters as part of an ACs magazine we were putting together. I decided to rush out the last part and actually post it somewhere before I delete it from my computer.

Chapter 1

Beginning of the Bulls

Turnbull ACs started July 2nd 2012, as one of LB’s first “concept crews”. Dave, previously known as UnEtHiCaL, had been banned for a year after a conflict with the site owner. Dave had come back whilst banned under an account known as Master Masai. Although the account’s purpose was for sniping only, Dave began to get to know some of the up and comers of the site, helping guys like MadVerbs and Ray Rashad with their writing and noticing a lot of potential around the entire site.

Once the Dave account had been created, Dave asked Teek if he would be able to take over his crew, then called Soul Calibres. With an empty crew as his starting tool, Dave began recruiting everyone with low to high potential that he could find. The first recruit to the crew was ShotsFired, who later became well known by the alias Manhattan. Other people to be recruited during this time were Kw0n, Seth (Enfinite), JOSH (Dean), ~SHINIGAMI~, BP Pride (WarSand) and many more. The highlight of the early recruiting process was convincing Unyqe (now known as Letum) to halt the creations of his own crew, Chloroformers, and instead join ACs along with the recruits he had already found. Through this crew merge, ACs brought in Phenomonon and ILLoKWENT.

The crew was initially ridiculed for being too full, and having little talent, but it took less than a month for Turnbull ACs to gain the respect of everyone on the site. AfterThought reached out to join as a multi account and help out, but was removed when he intended to join a crew tournament without revealing his alias. Future administrator NOBLE also joined with a multi account, Mike G, as he too saw the potential of what the crew could eventually become.

Within just one month, ACs had done enough to earn an underdog spot in ILLMANIA 3. This was the most ambitious ILLMANIA to date, with 4 crews being involved. Previous winners and future Hall of Famers ClassicK were involved, long time veteran crew Dead Poets Society were involved, and future ACs rivals and new start up audio crew Legion of Doom were involved. The event was shadowed by controversy, which was heightened when RULE placed Dave against him in the main event in an audio battle, which Dave had never competed in before. The battle never took place however, as comments from Dave (intended to hype up the battle) led to RULE reinstating the ban which Pugz had enforced previously.

Phenomonon, along with Unyqe and ILLoKWENT, tried their best to keep the crew organized, but a poor turnout for the event led to a large portion of the crew being cut and a revamp quickly taking place. Members who were removed at that time were JOSH, who became the Rookie of the Year just a few months later and WarSand, who then took a long hiatus off from the site.

This time, and the members who joined ACs during it, are commonly referred to as “The ACs Originals”.

Chapter 2

Making Waves

With Dave banned, ACs faced certain failure, or at least in the eyes of everyone on the site. Unyqe, ILLoKWENT and Phenomonon were not well known members of Letsbeef at the time, and it wasn’t expected that they’d be able to run an elite crew on their own. This couldn’t have been more wrong.

Unyqe quickly took the reins, and ACs went into revamp mode. Against all odds, Unyqe managed to recruit some of the best audio battlers ever to be part of Letsbeef. Duane Jackson, Advocate and InZane were the 3 main features of this aspect of the crew. In December 2012, Duane Jackson brought home Turnbull ACs first ever title by winning the Minute To Win It 2 track competition.

Audio wasn’t the only thing that saw vast improvement. During this time, Sluggo Von Punch (Agonize/Barfight), Dirty Work, Jam Jar and Obey were added to the crew. The standout however, was CulrpiT. During a very short amount of time, CulpriT managed to earn victories over Mind Fuck, Black Book, ViTRiOL, Letum, InZane, MadVerbs and other well-known people on a streak that lasted weeks and spanned a huge amount of battles.

The downside of ACs during this time was the amount of people who passed through it. Lots of people were recruited, kicked or simply left. Xplissit, v3numb, MadVerbs, CakedOut and other recognizable names all passed through the crew during this time, and the likes of the above weren’t exactly the type you’d want to associate a top crew with at that time (MadVerbs later became a most respected battler).

On the other hand, in a new direction for ACs, Erupt and Streetz Da Hood joined ACs during this time. Both were given leader spots, which broke standard conduct of the crew at the time, but both had a lot of experience on LB and brought a lot to the team.

When Dave returned early in 2013, the crew had a very different look. Even the most difficult to impress members of the site, such as Prince S Tana, created threads hailing ACs for their audio capabilities, which was solidified when Advocate added a second track title to the trophy cabinet. Enfinite, Manhattan, Phenomonon and Agonize had begun making a big name for themselves, while new comers Anarchist and Duh Great Whyte trailed behind with ILLoKWENT and Unyqe.

ACs had become the best audio crew on Letsbeef, and had the best potential in text of any crew for many years. The crew forum activity was unheard of, with the harmony within the crew clicking completely.

Chapter 3

Defectors

Everything had clicked so well for ACs until this point, that instead of waiting until July like planned, the crew created a ‘second crew’ which would house the new recruits in March 2013. This crew, in a homage to the intended crew by Unyqe, Phe and ILL, was called Chloroformers. Tryout cyphers were put together for potential recruits. Some of the earliest recruits and standouts were Fayz (now under the alias of Soulus), No Name Needed (Lockhart) and Crysis.

Another innovative addition was ACs Academy. This was a social group with weekly challenges. In the first season, some now reasonably well-known names in Sucio and Tyger Woodz took part, but the season was eventually won by Brutal J, who was a member of the original ACs tryout cypher (along with Rohan Rane / THUG KILLER). The second season had a lot more people involved. EXECUTE, Dysfunctional, Prospect JS and Theodore Grizzly were involved, with the latter finishing in 1st place.

ACs had gotten to a place where it fully believed it could defeat Hall of Fame rivals ClassicK, which at the time was being run by GrizzEAT. Phenomonon, an ACs original, had left and joined ClassicK, which further pushed the feud. Just before the crew battle was to be put in place, ClassicK merged with its most prominent leader, RULE, and his new crew, The Regulators. During this time, ACs member 0RC fled to join them, alongside another ACs original in Manhattan. It was a fairly dark time for the crew, with longtime members abandoning the squad in search for something bigger. Phenomonon at the time had said that he didn’t believe he could learn anymore in ACs and felt he had outgrown the crew and become too good for it, a statement he has since brushed off as foolish.

To add to the downsides, a feud between Erupt and Streetz saw Erupt leave the crew. Later, another argument between Streetz and Letum let to Streetz being removed.

When GrizzEAT decided to create a new crew, Murda Musik, neither crew was aware of the rivalry which was being set.

Chapter 4

Undisputed Best

In the Summer of 2013, the rivalry had begun. Murda Musik and ACs were at each other’s throats almost from the moment that Grizz’ crew was accepted. The main reason for this is that MM consisted of many of the members of ClassicK, which had ruined the previous crew battle challenge. To make matters worse, ACs audio side greatly declined through inactivity, and the level of good track makers on the site was very low. OSKAR leaving ACs, and eventually finding his way into MM only exacerbated the feud.

Just as the summer closed, ACs made an official challenge for ILLMANIA against Murda Musik. While AfterThought and Grizz insisted that MM was the best crew, they rejected the crew battle challenge. Further challenges were made to ClassicK and Legion of Doom, but for one reason or another they were unable to accept the challenges.

ACs had finally come into its own. The majority of the crew were members of the FVC, and 2FUEL, Dave and ILLoKWENT were Letsbeef moderators. The titles started pouring in with everyone in the crew winning every small level title possible. Murda Musik suffered a long bout of inactivity, and it was undisputed that Turnbull ACs was the best crew on Letsbeef. Lockhart capped it all off by upsetting the odds to take on RULE in the Grand Championship finals. After a razor close battle with Dissizit in the GC, ILLoKWENT became known as a top name, and was representing ACs at every turn.

The audio lull was soon fixed too, namely by the addition of M-Rock and ALLBORO. As a result of Dave being the topical mod, and ACs members such as Agonize, Dirty Work and Jam Jar being stand out topical performers, M-Rock was added in as audio topical support. Before long, M-Rock engaged himself in a war with Murda Musik and Legion of Doom, and defeated them all in a ‘Track Maker of the Year’ earning performance. Chloroformers boasted a solid audio support with emceekilgore, Egotistik and ASP3CT.
The height of ACs achievement to date was earned by M-Rock during this time. Rock defeated every foe possible en route to winning the greatest prize possible on Letsbeef.com; the Grand Championship. Not many crews can say the same thing, and in taking the title, Rock put ACs down in history. Obey also broke out and made a name for himself by winning the Rookie of the Year title.

ACs was at its best possible stage to date, and nothing could derail the success. Well, nothing except a 3rd ban for Dave. After a colourful week of arguments with the staff, capped off with a resignation cypher which ranked on the all-time best cyphers, Dave was once again permabanned from Letsbeef. This set the stage for ACs’ darkest chapter since it’s creation.

Chapter 5

The Dark Days & Rebuild

Following Dave’s third ban, ACs’ reign on top was cut short quite quickly. Lockhart rapidly left ACs and had a journey across several other crews. Phenomonon and Manhattan followed suite, and the foundations of the crew began to crumble.

All that remained active and in the crew was ILLoKWENT, Obey and M-Rock. Once Dave came back in early 2014, the crew was a wasteland compared to the one he had let down. Despite plans of bringing the crew back to its routes, ILLoKWENT was sceptical, and soon left to create his own crew.

The new breed of battlers really didn’t work out, and the quality of the crew was a shadow of what it once was. Some big moves fell through, but good prospects began showing interest in the crew again. AutoGraphh, Subreal, Bleu and others joined, and even though all of them didn’t last, it brought some much needed life back to the squad.

The popularity Bleu quickly gained was exactly what ACs needed, and before long former members such as Enfinite, Anarchist and Phenomonon were returning to the squad.

It took around 4 months for ACs to get back to a place where it was notable again, and after a callout to Legion of Doom, ILLMANIA 4 was arranged. Legion of Doom Vs Murda Musik Vs Turnbull ACs. Some disappointments such as Crysis leaving ACs over the acquisition of THUG KILLER, Jack Skellington and Lockhart falling out leading to Jack leaving, and Manhattan betraying the crew at the last minute saw ACs pitted as the heavy underdogs. No one saw what was about to unfold.

Chapter 6

Legends

It took a few years to put together, but ILL4 was officially announced. ACs had lost Crysis, Jack Skellington (Rant) and Manhattan refused to return all right as the matches were to be announced. Turnbull ACs were already big underdogs due to some of the powerhouse names in the opposing corners.
With the matches announced however, Dave made a claim that was laughed at; Turnbull ACs would win the tournament and longtime rivals Murda Muzik would be lucky to score a single point. In the end, to everyone’s surprise, that’s exactly how it played out. Despite THUG KILLER double crossing Turnbull ACs and posting a video of him burning a printed copy of the logo, a move that was heavily predicted from the ACs camp, the round ended with ACs – 5, Legion of Doom – 5 and Murda Muzik – 1.

It all came down to a tie breaker. 2 audio battles and 1 topical battle. LoD were known on the site as the strongest audio crew in years, and matters were made worse when ACs’ Bleu no showed his battle. LoD’s championship topical writer Erupt also failed to produce a verse and everything came down to one diss track battle; M-Rock Vs Phil Banks. In two of the best diss tracks LB has ever seen, M-Rock would win 4-1.

To the entire site’s disbelief, the “development crew” had just put its name down in history by winning Illmania 4, defeating two of the strongest crews in LB’s history.

While the moment was incredible, it was short lived. Letsbeef would seemingly screech to a halt just a month or two later with very bad activity.

Dave, being Dave, would get himself banned once again, this time with reinstating his permanent ban. There was very little solid work coming from any of the camps. Bleu was kicked from the crew for failing to show in his Illmania tie breaker and members like Lockhart and Anarchist tarnished their legacies by being exposed as biters. In 2015 after months of overall site and crew inactivity, it was decided by the remaining members that the best choice for the crew was to close it down.

Letsbeef might not last too much longer, but for every day it stands, Letsbeef.com will never forget the crew that broke the mould, transforming from a crew of rookies to the best crew on the site, transcending what it meant to get to the top of the food chain.

Quoting Lockhart and his terrible crew rep one last time; ACs till the day ceased.

That's when you know you talk too much about MMA haha

Funny how it switched. Once upon a time I'd be asking my brother who's boxing at the weekend and I'd say something like "Anyone good battling this weekend?".

Some good days alright. I'm pretty sure we are a big part of the reason why LB lasted a couple of years extra. I don't think MM and LoD would have been quite as big of a deal without us being in there instigating everything.
