This is the Way the World Ends

2032
The world was at peace, the economy never better
Until U.S. politicians who thought they were fresh and clever
Cut off welfare and health care, every vestige severed
And made military budgets the most distended ever as a preemptive measure.

“We need, for the sake of defense, to craft rockets,” said veteran Sam Wallace,
Defense Secretary in the executive branch office
Sellin’ his plan off to execs with fat wallets, the men who staff Congress
While slippin’ their cash wads in the President’s back pocket

***

BREAKING NEWS! US oil companies merge to form a monopoly!
It’s more than a novelty, it’s horrible ‘cuz honestly
These fools have the power to destroy the economy
The market just rebounded, but see, now it’ll recoil and squash the plebs.

China didn’t like that, but they let the US slide instead of tryin’ to fight back
Tensions raised but heads of state tried to cut the wire slack
Till one day China’s prime minister got sniped at for making a wisecrack
Said, “Fine” as they fired back at Iraq and all the tension in the line snapped…

And with that wild blast the world plunged into a crisis
Pundits criticized it, Republicans denied it
Till the moon exploded, as they duly noted, from the junk they’d left inside it
Subsequent inquirin’ showed that governments had tried at least a hundred different kinds
of weapons bluntly meant for violence
Snow was lifted, poles were shifted, all of it resulted in destruction of the climates

Who started all the new disarray? Would it be too dense to say the US of A?
It was true either way, but Sam’s nukes kept at bay the brute rebel nations and the new friends they made
Till some stupid, insane dude in Kuwait thought to move and invade with bazookas, grenades
And got two tons of hate dropped on his home country; after that, nobody even knew of its name
It was a true fuckin’ shame, but after that things got out of hand
The nuclear experiment gone wrong, they leveled Hong Kong and plowed Japan
Countries used to fight and still proudly stand but now they can’t
‘Cuz they’re too busy askin’ how they plant anything on this brown-gray land…

***

Oil drillin’ was slow to cause the Earth’s foundation to wilt from below
Leaders still didn’t know the bombs would only deal the finishing blow...

***

Sam’s life flashed before his eyes, he tore his tie, lay on the floor and cried
As he bore the lies told to him by mortal guys on the borderlines of their tortured minds
As oceans opened wide and engulfed the sky
Leaving swarms to die, Christians thought it was Rapture
Scientists stopped in their tracks, tried to halt the advance of the particle blaster
The government fucks just covered it up, like, “This is not a disaster!”
Their avarice cost them their chance as they lost at the hands of all the attackers
And showed all the faults of the mass conglomerates, captured
In the fall of one man from the top of the planet to the bottom, in scraps, dirt
For it was not little Sam Wallace, but rather the stars with the last word
The human race had forgotten its past, all the laws and the standards and the progress of man’s work
And ironically that led it all the way back to where it started from scratch--with no gods and no masters...

2014
A man walked in and sat, solid in stature,
pulled out his charts and his maps, said to all of his staffers,
“We’ve got a new plan to hydraulically fracture,
The only problem is that it could possibly crack Earth”
They just wanted cheap gas, so those heartless old bastards just nodded in laughter,
Like, “This is probably bad, but does it honestly matter?”

***

A kid lay in his bed, shakin’ his head, remembered bad dreams
Where people would run out yelling, scratching,
A general mad scene where people would cause tremors, smash things
The moon was in bits, looked like a lunar eclipse. Did that mean their heads were lacking?
He’d had these messed-up fantasies since...he wasn’t sure when, exactly, but they always ended badly
He pointed at the moon, his voice was sad and spooked: “Will it be here forever, daddy?”
The dad looked at his kid, unsure of whether he was depressed or happy,
Turned his head, looked and said, “I’m no professor, Sammy.”

Author's note: In case you don't know what hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") is, it's a common form of gas drilling that many people think is actually going to destroy the Earth's foundation eventually. Not to spread propaganda, just provide some context Good luck to everyone!
