Fortnite's BR mode is 100% inspired by PUBG and other Battle Royale games. PUBG was released well before Fortnite Battle Royale was even a thing. By that same token, PUBG didn't invent the Battle Royale genre, and also Fortnite had a standalone PVE mode. Which could be the confusion. But their BR mode definitely didn't exist prior to PUBG being a thing
