In fact, the way that Putin has guided the economy away from free market principles has actually stunted the growth of the Russian economy.

Wrong, it may not be a real free market but Russia's seen GDP growth under Putin. Putin's also made policy changes that drastically reduced homelessness. There's also been a world wide recession. So, I don't see how you can blame one person for everything.

Human rights are worse in Russia under Putin than Yeltsin.

Almost all of the anti slavery groups and civil rights groups (that actually made a difference) were also heavily influenced by church doctrine. State controlled religion serves the state. While also bashing any private institution. Not only do you want to limit freedoms you want to destroy any counter balance to the state.

In terms of it's institutions and in terms of freedom Russia has done nothing but go backwards under Putin. Once the going stops getting good for Russian oil, it's going to be a fucking hellhole again.
