Crew battles & even the illustrious Illmania crew tournament have taken place while the official "Crew Battle" function has been broken. As Nicholas said, the brackets simply need to be structured in a forum-based style instead of on a custom GUI.
As long as you build up enough of your roster to have like 3-5 battles take place against the members of the opposing crew, it can work out easily. Then you tally up the wins & see which crew comes out with the most, which becomes the prevailing crew in that battle
