when Snowden leaked information about the NSA & shit hit the fan, they had to justify what they do
they said they've intercepted several terrorist plots and attempts through those ILLEGALLY OBTAINED phone calls that they tapped. they say certain words get flagged and that alone is reason enough to get tapped
they also announced the SOPA, PIPA, & CISPA before the House...if you weren't living under a rock for the past year you'd know that these laws let the government intercept all of your searches, the text you input, and sensitive information you give to websites/companies WITHOUT a warrant.

& how do you know they don't already have a law that allows them to do so? You're not a lawmaker & since you weren't aware of SOPA/PIPA/CISPA I highly doubt you keep up with the latest laws. Even if they DIDN'T come out with a law like that, they could easily interpret the law to work in their favor. This has happened a countless # of times
