That's the truth. Its just about guaranteed if you do take a shortcut you'll end up losing it all just as fast as you got it.

And if your trying to gain stamina. Do cardio in intervals.
That and really with the right amount of motivation you can mentally pump yourself and you'll start noticing yourself do shit you didn't think you can do.
