Well thats why they are called extremists, they'll go to any length. Even if it means a few of their own get killed in the process, But yeah it's all just speculation. The M.O fits some loner with a grudge to religious/political terrorist wanting to make a statement on a global scale. I am thinking the same though that it's probably just some odd ball with a grudge. just have to wait and find out.
