I was debating in philosophy class against my professor because he said Socrates maybe didn't want to prove his innocence, on the contrary, he may have wanted to become a martyr. I completely disagreed with the mofo and told him that simply getting his point across may have caused others to mistake his motives for arrogance. Because he never dismissed the claims against him from Meletus, he simply challenged Meletus' claims by drawing him into debate concerning his doctrine. It was just "happenstance" that the court felt dumb as hell because they'd been dickriding the gods. He figured the death would suffice.
