Default Universal Basic Income

What are your views on this concept? For those who aren't familiar, it is basically an unconditional and livable stipend everyone receives from the government to meet their basic needs. Many governments and municipalities are testing it out now since full automation (everyone's jobs being replaced by robots and AI) seems practically inevitable and likely to occur within the next 30 years.
When the machines have taken over all our jobs and we're all out of work and our only (or main) source of income comes from the government which doles out an equal amount to everyone, isn't this essentially socialism? How will society change when we don't have to work? How will governments change when we are no longer a source of tax revenue to them, but rather a sort of liability that they must pay for and look after?
