And that's what most of these shows will base their portrayals on. The Mansons, The Gaceys and the Dhamas. The Wests. Some of them were good looking some of them used other ways to gain control. It's these guys we hear about who are "romanticised" who had something about them to go about their business.
Obviously they manipulated "weak minded" people But Books and shows like this will always turn to the 1's like the above to get inspiration and even exagerate the circumstances/charm/level of control.
Tbh though I always seen Dexter as a cross between a film noir and a comic book character so I roll with it.
If you can suspend disbelief you're good to go. If you can't and you're a cynic who has to have everything by the book and grounded in reality. You're always going to struggle with a show like Dexter. I mean this isn't The Wire we're talking about
