For me Dexter is the same. It's full of subtleties that are bang on the money for a serial killers mindset, only using a unique take for a TV show. Like The subtle self concious jabs at himself parodying his circumstances when the time arises.

I think you take things at face value too much sometimes. I'm 1 of the first to pick a hole when I see it or call something contrived because it does something just for the sake of it. I'm not saying Dexter doesn't have those moments but for the most part it's for a deeper insight into his backstory and who he is. It isn't cookey or zaney for the sake of being cookey or zaney. It's his yang to the rest of the casts ying. You get their take on proceedings then you'll get his from the point of a man detached from all emotions the normal human beings feel through dark humour and what not.
