Over the last three or four years it's become increasingly popular to give lower ratings. Before then 8s, 9s and even 10s weren't all that unusual. I want to start a discussion on this and get everyone's opinions and reasons for rating the way they do. I rate higher than most people let me break down some of it...

5 - very little attempts to write punchlines. Often vague and not really hitting the mark.
6 - Clear punchlines although weak. Some use of multies.
7 - Decent jabs & decent multies.
8 - Good punches, good use of multies.
9 - Excellent, creative punches & great multies.
10 - Incredible punches, and incredible multies.

I'm banding in wordplay, metaphors, personals & so on under the label Punches and flow, delivery etc. under the term Multies just to make this easy. Recently I've seen verses from Manhattan, Row, Malishus etc. (the top echelon of the site) and people are dropping 6's and 7's? If you're dropping 6's or 7's on their verses, what are you giving everyone else? If you want to rate low, then that's one thing but you have to have consistency. It seems a lot of you are just unwilling to give anything higher than a 7.

Shit I was thinking about this last week. Audio was the most generous with the votes, I use to get 10's all day. Whilst text you're lucky to break a 6. Here recently I've been trying to pass out higher ratings on the decent battles

I wrote extensively about my battle scoring method here: https://www.letsbeef.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148967

Probably it needs revision, for multiple reasons, but I'd rather avoid that so read it as-is. Also, it explains why some people have accused me of low-rating.

Skimmed through it. It's pretty accurate, I'd cosign this

It's almost like people are hating on their competition / aren't looking at it realistically. I rate on the higher end if the battle is solid

ALL. FUCKING. DAY. Every G-d damned day.

Using a 1-10 rating system the way a 1-10 rating system is supposed to be used is not low voting. 1 is absolutely incomprehensible garbage, 5 is mediocre, and 10 is perfect. You scale everything else between. A 7 on a 1-10 scale is REALLY good.

Honestly, I'm ecstatic that the old inflated scoring is gone. I've railed against it for YEARS now. It's why the ESL/Star Ratings got so fucked up as to be useless. To the point where someone like Orthadox has an ESL of 8.35. If people are ranking correctly now the system should start to adjust and correctly reflect a users skill level.

Let's be real, go look at my last text battle and tell me if you can HONESTLY say that you think I deserve to have a 7.82 out of 10 skill level. Because I'll readily admit that it should be a 6 at the maximum. And that's probably being generous still.

I've read some incredible battles and seen people rating 6's and 7's. The same people will rate 6's and 7's on a decent verse. There is no consistency, it's as if they max out at 7 and will never give anything higher than that. If you want to utilise the whole 10 point scoring system then fair enough, but never giving any higher than a 7 is still not utilising the whole 10 points.

I agree that it has to be consistent. Or, at least as consistent as is possible in such a subjective medium. If people are just not voting above a 7 or not utilizing anything below a 6-7 then it certainly does present a problem that should be attempted to be remedied somehow.
