Question RULE's The Basics Series: Wordplay

RULE's The Basics Series: Wordplay

Ok, im gonna give you guys and gals some pointers on how to create a solid if simple wordplay.

Step One: Writing Format

The best thing to do when writing a wordplay based punchline is come up the piece of wordplay you want to use first. You either use the wordplay as the ACTUAL punch, or as the punch set-up. Heres an example of both:

Using wordplay as the punch set-up:

The titles mine! So the "wooden spoon" is for you when THIS IS FINISHED, FAGGIT WELL i guess you "won oak, lock" like SIXTY MINUTES AFTER TWELVE!! (1 o'Clock)

Using wordplay as the actual punch:

Hoe-kay chico! We are SET IN THE RING TO PUNCHES & it'll be like 'Lipo gone wrong'' since you'll be "''DEAD IN: THE INCH-REDUCTION" (Dead In The Introduction)

Inch-Reduction/Introduction is far from perfect, but illustrates the use of wordplay as a punch, as opposed to a set-up.

Step Two: Creating A Wordplay

Creating the actual wordplay is the key. With text battling you MUST make sure it works cleans as read. In audio battling you can use accents to tweek the pronouncation but in text it must be spot on or you are going to lose major points. In my expierence there are two easy ways to make wordplays, not the only ways... but easy ways. Thats: Nameplay wordplay & Basic wordplay.

Step Three: Nameplay Wordplay:

Simply take the name of your opponent, and see if you can create a word by adding to either the start of the name or end. Dont forget to split the name up and use this on nicknames. Lets use the man himself, RULE!

Words with RULE in/before/after it:

Roulette
Rulership
Cruelty
Unruly
Overrule

Once you've made a list of words, start looking at possible wordplays that can be made with them.

Roulette / RULE Let
Rulership / Rule A Ship
etc etc

Dont forget to break the name up if applicable. Lets try this with RULE twin, Revan!

Revenue
Vandalize
Revolution
Vanilla

Again, once you have a list start looking for possible wordplays

Revenue / Rev A New
Vandalize / Van The Lies
etc etc

Step Four: Basic Wordplay

With this format its just a case of taking any word you can think of and trying to add, split or join the word with any other.

Simple cases are words that already have double meanings. Heals / Heels for example. You can use this to make a decent punch just by building it right.

Ya girl found out u like men & then she DUMPED YOU so ima give her dick until the "bitch heart heals" like she LOVES SHOES!! (Heels)

Simple, yet solid.

Other words you should treat just like the nameplay wordplay, just try adding words to it.

Lets take a simple word, like "Nine". Could be used in gunplay so lets see if we can make a wordplay from it.

Nineties?... Canine?... Assinine?... all three have potential.

Which gun to use? I'll pull the LARKIN, THEN AGAIN i love the way my "Nine tee's off" like im only CHARGIN TEN PERCENT!!! (Nineties Off)

Simple shiiiit.

Step Five: Writing The Bar

Once you have the wordplay you want to use, its just a case of choosing the right way to execute it. Lets take that Roulette / RULE Let wordplay from eariler.

So we need to create the punch around RULE Let. So... RULE let you win? RULE let you battle? RULE let you drop? Hmmm how about a concept like: RULE let you drop just so i could destroy you! Ok, thats the concept. So now its about crafting a punchline with that as the set-up.

"Rule-Let You Drop"... in roulette the ball is "dropped" so maybe theres something there? The roulette wheel gets "twisted" theres another word. Already this concept is growing in possibilty.

Lets go with... cuz "Rule Let You Drop" to knock the CHIP OF YOUR SHOULDER!!! Chip, Roulette, casinos etc etc ties in decently.

So we have the punch, now to build it. It need to build to the insult that i let him battle only for an easy win. So...

Why did i battle this lame? Dont get it "Twisted" his SHIT ISNT KNOWN FOR being the SICKEST SO KNOW YOUR here cuz "Rule-Let" u "Drop" jus to knock-the 'CHIP' OFF YOUR SHOULDER!!! (Roulette)

The concept has much more potential than this bar, but its solid enough, and easy to make!

REMEMBER that this is MERELY the easiest and quickest ways to create wordplays, there are many ways to craft stronger and more creative wordplays. Many people have different styles and you should always work to your own strengths. But this will provide a nice starting point.
