From what I understand, the star system is an average of all of the ratings that you've received in votes in your battles. The star system rating for a given battle is an average of all of the ratings that have been given to both of the competitors in that battle.
It's meant to use ratings as a measure of your skill, but it's obviously fairly deficient, because different people rate things differently. Bad voters will sooner give a bad battle a 10 than good voters will give a good battle an 8. The result of this is that non-competitive battles - even ones by wack battlers that nobody good will bother to read and vote on - score far more highly than they should, even eclipsing good battles in some instances (as do the battlers who write them). Furthermore, sometimes, people will half-ass a battle and get (justified) low ratings; this does not make them any worse as a battler, in terms of their actual skill.
