From high in incandescent clouds, as gilded fingers rest upon funereal cloths, I watch the unrepentant flow of death and life and death. What ailment is the journey which begins but never ceases? I know not the calm of silence nor cacophony of grief. My existence, lost but ever-present, as the gatekeeper of the victorious, the pious and the faithful. It is a privilege that saps. An honour that drains.

Though I reside in the mind of man, though my life flows through his, what is it that swills around these pallid veins of mine? What lies in my own mind?

My tired fingers rest upon a tight bundle in my pocket, wrapped in silk, whose tinkling chatter whispers old wisdom. A bag of pearls. 

I think upon this bar of pearls, a shimmering ocean kept within a silken bag. These pearls to me are everything and nothing: my only, lonely possession. Deep below the surface - where the pressure chokes the lung, where empty shells so carelessly dispensed lie dormant on the beds - from in these sallow depths came pearls, in pure abundance. 

Gems.

Concealed by nature's hand, the pearls lie darkly and unseen. Lie starkly, proud but unloved. Pearls, whose whole existence is there to tantalise. Pearls, whose wondrous glimmer blinks newborn into the vast unknown. Pearls, obscure and angry as their charm remains a secret. Pearls, whose whispered song returns not even the faintest echo. Pearls, marked by the clod in which they're found, layered in the filth of their habitat.

I own these pearls.

But beside them in amidst the collection rest pearls whose shine is buffed and polished. Pearls, who virginal blanche bring colour to the cheeks of the meek. Pearls, who close their eyes and be carried by the rise and fall of the breast. Pearls, whose neighbours shine just as bright upon regalia, and whose companions' precious glare brings out their own luminosity. Pearls, who adorn the great and good. Pearls, whose beauty steals the breath of the awestruck. Pearls, who goad the lowly onlooker. Pearls, who pass their subtle wisdom from the hearts of mothers to hands of their daughters.

I own these pearls.

Confused and anxious faces pass me by. I kneel gently in the mist and pour these pearls from amidst the silk. With ethereal grace they flow, leaving wisps and silver rivulets in their wake. 

I gaze on my pearls - their vulnerability, their simplicity and their beauty.

I own these pearls.

I touch upon each pearl in time and raise it from the mist. With maternal caress, I lift each one and thread him around these golden gates. In a precious labour, so impassioned it could be caused only by idolatrous love or the purest of hatred, my hand make the pearls writhe and entwine.

So many men will pass me by, their time-worn hands upon my gate.

But in their haste, they do not see, the dark pearls shine the brightest.

Jam Jar	The theme here was St Peter's Tears. The piece is written from the perspective of St Peter as he rests beside the Gates of Heaven. The concept which links the St Peter, the literal and metaphorical meanings is that of Pearls. From his privileged position at the Gates, St Peter reflects on the human nature of those who pass by his gates into heaven. Posted on: 2013-01-17 18:40:24
Jam Jar	The 'Pearls' are the literal pearls which he weaves around the bars of his gates (the pearly gates into heaven...), but the metaphorical nature sees pearls as souls. Comparing the dirty and undiscovered pearls with those that are polished and made into jewelry or family heirlooms, it is reflecting on the nature of Goodness - whether it is more pure to be extravagant and celebratory in one's soul, or whether it is the unpolished pearls - like the rough diamonds - whose understated purity, less garish, carries greater goodness.
